As a big storm rolled into the state this week, law enforcement warned about the risks of leaving a vehicle “puffing,” or idling unattended, as it warms up. This practice is illegal in many parts of the country and can put drivers at-risk of auto theft, as well as contribute to pollution.

So far this year, the police department said there have been about 200 puffing incidents. Thomson said some criminals actively look for victims on cold mornings.

Twin boys were in the vehicle when it was left running and then stolen near West 5th Avenue and Mead Street.

Denver police said the car was stolen from the area of 5th Avenue and Meade Street around 7:30 a.m. with the twin 2-year-olds inside at the time. The mother of the boys had returned to her home to pick up her older son and take him to school and had briefly ran inside when the vehicle was stolen. She said the vehicle was stolen in the span of about a minute.

If you own a sport-tuned Subaru WRX or performance-tuned WRX STI it has been targeted by car thieves, especially in Colorado and around the Denver area. Car thieves have chosen the WRX/STI for its performance parts that can be sold for big money. But according to a report from the Denver Post, the WRX/STI is not the most-stolen Subaru in the Rocky Mountain area.

So far this year GJPD has received a total of 125 reported stolen cars and 230 thefts from automobiles. The latest numbers show a slight uptick in the number of cars stolen. A lot of these are what police call crimes of opportunity.

The Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) has just released its list of the top ten stolen vehicles in our state. In an effort to prevent more auto thefts in our area, the Brighton Police Department received steering wheel immobilizers, more commonly known as “clubs,” from the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force (C-MATT).
